What does Coco Chanel’s women’s fashions and the eco balance on our packaging have in common? Both are revolutionary pioneers — one for Haute Couture, the other in the food sector. And the organic Veganz Gourmet Classic carries its eco balance stylishly on its packaging. As you can see from the imagine on top, it’s been broken down into four categories so that you can clearly see how sustainable our dairy free cheese actually is. Why are we doing this? How the “Little White One”

achieves greatness with style

Classic elegance and extraordinary subtlety can be found in the flavour of our Gourmet Classic. But its exquisite ingredients can do far more than that. Being a vegan product, the “Little White One” protects the animal world as well as the rainforest. In addition, the raw materials used have a low carbon footprint. Exceptionally refined, this is how the dairy free cheese gets its 3 stars.

made a faux pas

White boots, bell bottoms and the water footprint made by Gourmet – Oui, even the best of make mistakes. Indeed, this dairy free cheese does a lot for the environment due to its vegan recipe and certified organic ingredients, but its water usage is unfortunately too high: Cashews have a relatively high water footprint and need quite a bit of the valuable liquid in order to grow. In addition, the water supply infrastructure where they are grown is not yet fully developed. Also, the cashew yield is rather low, translating into around 3.3 kilos of cashew nuts that are irrigated, but bring a yield of only about 1 kilo of shelled cashews.

There has to be a solution – no doubt. But unfortunately we don’t know how this solution will look as yet. We could, for example, help on site or obtain the ingredients from other regions. But no matter what the solution will be – the know-how of today flows into the products of tomorrow.

Origin of raw materials

We get our cashews for the organic Veganz Gourmet Classic from India. The coconut oil travels from Indonesia, one of the most important coconut oil suppliers in the world. Both ingredients come from certified organic farms.

Did you know that most vegan, dairy free cheeses are made with additives and thickeners as well as artificial aromas? Not exactly the most elegant solution, is it? In the end, all we want is a simple and straightforward ingredients list — everything else is passé. That’s why we’ve made our Gourmet Classic with just a few organic, raw food ingredients, forming them into a handmade creation of extravagant indulgence. Très chic, I’d say.

Lactic acid cultures in a plant-based product? Yes, but don’t worry. These cultures are neither animal nor plant. They’re their own species, so-called prokaryotes, and naturally vegan since we don’t use substances of animal origin for the cultivation of microorganisms. We need these special lactic acid cultures for the Veganz Gourmet Classic in order to ferment it — which is similar to the way cheese or yoghurt is produced. Our dairy free cheese gets its one-of-a-kind, full-bodied aroma through this very special maturation process.

Yes, the Veganz Gourmet is like the “Little Black Dress” – perfectly suitable for every occasion and every opportunity: Whether as mozzarella substitute for a light caprese, a feta alternative in your BBQ basket or for refining salads, sauces and soups. It also gives risotto a special creaminess as well as the finishing touches on your pizza e pasta. And if you’re in a hurry, cut up our “Little White One” into thin slices, like a camembert, and put them on a fresh slice of whole-wheat bread – a fit like a glove!

What about sustainable attire?

Hm, difficult. The Veganz Gourmet Classic is a delicate product with a relatively short sell-by date, which means that comprehensive product protection is particularly important here. And so, unfortunately, we have to cover it in plastic – but there’s one thing you can be sure of, we don’t think it’s very chic either. We’d love to wrap it in paper like a camembert, but it’s too moist for that, and the additional cardboard box prevents the dairy free cheese from being crushed thereby retaining its shape. As you can see, there are certain issues that make it difficult to do away with plastic packaging. But of course, as a vegan and sustainable brand, we see it as our absolute duty to look for more environmentally friendly alternatives — after all, ingredients and packaging go hand in hand. We’re not perfect, but we always have our eyes and ears open.
